Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects millions worldwide and is commonly managed with medications like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). However, not all patients find relief through these treatments, leading researchers to explore alternative therapies.
A recent study published in Neurogastroenterology & Motility looks at a non-invasive method that could potentially aid those struggling with GERD symptoms.
The study examines the use of a Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation System (TESS), developed by GerdCare Medical, which is designed for home use and applies electrical stimulation to the abdomen. This device targets the abdominal muscles, potentially affecting the mechanisms that control acid reflux.

The clinical trial recruited 31 patients who reported persistent GERD symptoms despite PPI use. These participants used TESS for a period of three weeks. According to the study, there was a decrease in the number of heartburn and regurgitation episodes reported by the participants.
Measurements also indicated a reduction in oesophageal acid exposure time (AET), suggesting a decrease in the direct contact of acid with the oesophagus.
While the results indicate a reduction in symptom frequency and AET, it is important to approach these findings with caution. The study was relatively small and lacked a control group, which is a limitation.
The exact mechanism by which TESS might reduce acid exposure is not fully understood, and the study’s authors suggest further research to confirm these findings and clarify how the device affects the oesophageal environment.
