A recent study published in Scientific Reports has identified a connection between gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Sjogren’s syndrome (SS), shedding light on how these two conditions might influence each other.
The study used advanced genetic analysis techniques to explore this relationship, providing new insights that could impact the way these diseases are diagnosed and treated.
GERD occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the oesophagus, causing irritation and discomfort. Sjogren’s syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the salivary and lacrimal glands, leading to dry mouth and dry eyes, but it can also impact other parts of the body, including the digestive system.
The study’s approach
Researchers used a method called bidirectional Mendelian randomisation (MR) to determine whether there is a causal relationship between GERD and SS. By analysing genetic data from large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS), the team was able to examine the genetic links between these two conditions.
Key findings
- GERD as a risk factor for Sjogren’s syndrome: The analysis showed a positive correlation between GERD and an increased risk of developing SS. Specifically, individuals with genetic predispositions for GERD were more likely to develop SS.
- No reverse effect: Interestingly, the study found no significant evidence that having SS increases the risk of developing GERD.
