Science and medical researchers often use Peptest as a diagnostic test for quickly and easily detecting the gastric enzyme pepsin in saliva and exhaled breath samples.
Dr Elin-Johanne Katle, at Stavanger University Hospital in Oslo, has used Peptest during her recent investigations into the potential connection between gastric problems, such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, and sinus issues, such as sinusitis.
Elin-Johanne recently reached the final of a prestigious science communication competition in Norway – the Forsker Researcher Grand Prix 2014 – where she shared the findings of her exciting research studies.
Sinusitis, also known as rhinosinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses and a disease that affects around 15 per cent of the adult population.
Elin-Johanne’s research looked at connections between gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and chronic rhino-sinusitis to see whether people with GORD have a different nose or sinus-related quality of life compared to others.
The Researcher Grand Prix involves PhD candidates presenting their research to a large audience within four minutes. Elin-Johanne’s lecture Can belly trouble lead to sinusitis? secured her route from a regional contest in Stavinger to the competition’s grand final which took place in Oslo on Saturday 27 September.
